Ascension is also a congregation of a particular Christian family – the Lutheran family. The Lutheran Church is named for Martin Luther, one of the Protestant reformers of the 1500’s. The key phrase that summarizes the Lutheran reformation is “Justification by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.” While other Christians believe this too, Lutherans have given special emphasis to this belief that God’s love for us can not be earned but is given to us freely because of our faith relationship with Jesus. At Ascension we attempt to shape all that we do by this practice and celebration of God’s gracious love.
Ascension was established in 1936 and is affiliated with the Metropolitan Chicago Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

New Member Orientation
Ascension welcomes new members! There are three paths to membership. Those who have been baptized and confirmed members of another Lutheran congregation may simply request a letter of transfer from their previous congregation. Those who have been
baptized and confirmed – or something equivalent – in another Christian denomination may meet with the pastor for an orientation
to the Lutheran heritage. Those who have not had substantial instruction in Christian faith will be invited to a four to five hour session course on basic Christian beliefs. When this preparation is completed, Ascension’s Church Council approves their membership and a
New Member Sunday is scheduled for introducing new members to the congregation. If you are interested in becoming a member of Ascension, please talk with Pastor Timm.
Baptism Through Holy Baptism, we are reborn children of God and liberated from sin and death. Baptism signifies a relationship with the church and a commitment to God. Please contact the church if you are seeking Baptism for yourself or your child. Ordinarily we baptize infants, but we baptize older children and adults too. Weddings If you would like to be married at Ascension, please talk with Pastor Timm. Pre-marital counseling is required, which consists of three sessions before the wedding. You don’t need to be a member of Ascension to be married here, but membership should be a possibility.
Funerals I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live. John 11:25 We hope to comfort you in your time of sorrow. Should you need assistance planning a funeral please call the church office. |
