Ascension participates in sewing workshops for "Dress a Girl Around The World", a program sponsored by Hope 4 Women International. Members of this ministry learn to upcycle old shirts into beautiful, simple but sturdy dresses for needy girls in over 80 different countries. For many, these dresses are the only new clothing they will ever own. Having appropriate clothing means a girl is able to go to school, help her family outside the home, and be part of her local community with dignity.
In October, we regularly participate in a food packaging event with the Riverside/North Riverside Covenant of Churches. Volunteers of all ages come together to package meals of macaroni and cheese fortified with soy and vitamins for local food banks. Feed6 is a local group which organizes the event. Feed6 partners with Outreach, an international 501(c)(3) to facilitate the packaging.
In addition to the summer service trip of adult leaders and youth going to Appalachia, we organize events to raiser funds and awareness for the Appalachia Service Project. These events are various dinners, silent auctions, or similar events where we can share information about ASP.
Our March monthly mission project is to assist the ELCA with their Ebola Outbreak Response. In the last several months, the Ebola outbreak has claimed thousands of lives. The virus has spread rapidly and the World Health Organization is calling it "one of the world's most lethal diseases". Your gift can help send much needed food to the affected areas. Please drop off your donation at Ascension or visit www.elca.org/disaster for more information.
For many years, Ascension has invited the community into our home for an Oktoberfest event to support this non-profit food distribution and training center. Our Ascension chefs and volunteers organize a fun night to raise money for GCFD. Thrivant Financial often provides matching funds to enhance the return of volunteer efforts. The GCFD is a Cook County network of 650 pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, mobile programs, children and adult programs and other responses to address the root causes of hunger. www.chicagosfoodbank.org
